I Hated San Francisco, Now I’m Moving There

And my unique approaching to moving —

I visited San Francisco for the first time this past June… and hated it.

Having visited Los Angeles and New York, I expected San Francisco to be some perfectly balanced fusion of the two cities…

However, I didn’t love my visits to Los Angeles or New York, so maybe it’s unfair to expect a fusion of the two to be appealing.

I digress.

When my girlfriend and I rolled into San Francisco proper a few hours after sunset, I was surprised to discover my expectations were woefully off-target.

I was immediately overwhelmed. I’ve done my fair share of cross-country driving, but my experience in metropolitan areas is limited, and it showed. I was taken aback by how city-like San Francisco was — I’d expected something more green and sprawling.

San Francisco marked the halfway point in our ten-day road trip. We’d spent the last 12 hours in the car and were both at our wit’s end.

The first fit of frustration came trying to find parking for our hotel. Exhaustion and hunger didn’t mix well with the maze of one-way streets and incessant horn honking that seemed purposefully confusing and disorienting.
